Introduction

‘Ecolution SBS’ (sustainable building solutions), or 'Ecolution' for short, is an Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) consultancy dedicated to improving New Zealand's built living and working environments. Founded on the three fundamental pillars of ecology, evolution, and solutions, Ecolution strives to advance the way sustainability is implemented in NZ buildings and provide tailored, low-cost, high-value solutions for it’s clients.

Ecolution's services focus on three key outcomes – health, efficiency and environment. The overarching term used for this aspect of buildings is ‘performance’. As a consulting addition to design teams (e.g. architects, engineers, etc.) Ecolution provides expert advice, supported by modelling and calculations, on ways to improve a building’s performance.

Some examples of how Ecolution does this include:

  • Supporting clients and design teams to clarify sustainability aspirations and set appropriate targets.

  • Developing sustainability and energy strategies to best achieve desired results.

  • Arranging layouts and facade design to maximise access to natural resources like daylight, fresh air and free solar heat.

  • Passive design techniques (such as targeted glazing) to provide control across the threshold between outdoors and indoors.

  • Shading and ventilation techniques to manage heat build-up and mitigate overheating risks.

  • Complementary passive base building, active MEP systems and renewables integration.

  • First principal design methods for concepts, and dynamic energy modelling for empirical validation.

  • Advice on H1 requirements and assessing compliance.

  • Carbon emissions advice and modelling.

  • Process management and design advice for Green Star and Homestar and Passive House certification.

  • Health and wellbeing considerations, such as air quality systems, material selection and connection to nature.

  • Occupancy evaluations to determine user satisfaction, issues to address and completed project success.

  • 'Streamlining' design elements to improve simplicity, buildability and cost.

With over 10 years of industry experience in NZ and the UK, Ecolution has gathered a wide range of knowledge on local and international design methodologies, building types, regulatory frameworks and worked with many different clients of varying backgrounds.

A core belief at Ecolution is that 'simplicity rules'. Building projects are getting exceedingly complex which is contributing to the escalating costs. By pursuing and developing simple and practical solutions to given problems, we enable greater potential cost savings and a more enjoyable experience.
